Frequently Asked Questions

Chiropractic is categorized as an alternative medicine in the Netherlands and some other countries. This is because it is not (yet) officially recognized by the Dutch government as a conventional medical treatment. Nevertheless, this classification does not mean that chiropractic care is of lesser value to patients.

It is important to emphasize that chiropractic, as a discipline, is based on extensive scientific studies. These studies have shown that chiropractic care is an extremely effective and cost-effective method for treating back pain, neck pain, and other musculoskeletal conditions. In addition, chiropractic care focuses on improving overall health and well-being by optimizing spinal function and the nervous system.

In many countries, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United States, chiropractic has been recognized and integrated into mainstream healthcare for many years. In these countries, chiropractors often work with other health professionals to provide a holistic approach to health and wellness.

We hope that chiropractic will soon be recognized as an official form of health care in the Netherlands. This would not only improve the accessibility and integration of chiropractic care, but also contribute to a broader understanding and recognition of the benefits it can provide for patients with various health conditions.

At Healthwise Kliniek we are committed to providing high-quality chiropractic care, based on the most current scientific insights, and we strive for better recognition and understanding of chiropractic in the Netherlands.

When choosing the right treatment for musculoskeletal complaints, two terms often come up: manual therapy and chiropractic. Although these two treatment methods are similar in some respects, there are some important differences.

Treatment focus and approach:

  • Manual therapy: A manual therapist mainly focuses on treating muscles and joints, with special attention to movement and functionality. This form of therapy is often used for complaints such as stiffness and pain in the back, neck and joints.
  • Chiropractic: A chiropractor has a broader approach. In addition to muscles and joints, a chiropractor also focuses on the spine and nervous system. Chiropractors look at the entire body and the way different systems interrelate, with a special focus on the spine and its impact on overall health.

Course:

  • Manual therapy: This is a specialization after the HBO physiotherapy course. Manual therapists therefore have an extensive background in physiotherapy before they specialize.
  • Chiropractic: Chiropractors undergo university training, which focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, pathological processes, the analysis of X-rays and MRI diagnostics, and extensive clinical experience.

Chiropractic has been recognized as an official form of medicine for years in countries such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United States. Chiropractic is not yet officially recognized in the Netherlands, which means that training to become a chiropractor is not yet available here. However, at Healthwise Kliniek we recognize the valuable contribution that chiropractic can make to overall health and well-being, and we strive to make this form of care more accessible in the Netherlands.

Another major difference between manual therapist and chiropractor is the training. Manual therapy is a follow-up training to the HBO study to become a physiotherapist. Chiropractic is a university course.

A chiropractor is distinguished from a manual therapist by their university education. This training is mainly focused on diagnosis, recognition of pathological processes, analysis of X-rays and MRI diagnostics and extensive clinical experience. The treatment of a chiropractor goes further than that of a manual therapist. Manual therapy is a continuation of the physiotherapy study, which you can study in the Netherlands. Chiropractic is currently not recognized by the Dutch government and you cannot therefore study in the Netherlands.

The term "bone cracker" is sometimes used to describe a chiropractor, but this term misrepresents the professional and careful approach chiropractors take. At Healthwise Kliniek we would like to provide a more correct picture of what chiropractic entails.

Expertise in the human body: A chiropractor is an expert with extensive knowledge of the human body, especially the spine, nervous system, and musculoskeletal system. The goal of chiropractic care is to promote overall health and well-being by correcting dysfunctions in these systems.

Treatment techniques: In our clinic we use various advanced treatment techniques that suit the specific needs of each patient. These techniques are aimed at relieving pain, restoring freedom of movement and supporting the body's self-healing capacity.

The 'cracking' sound: It is true that sometimes a popping or 'cracking' sound can occur during a treatment. This sound is caused by the escape of air or gas from the synovial fluid when the chiropractor performs a correction. This phenomenon is completely normal and harmless. It is important to emphasize that this noise is not the goal of the treatment, but rather can be an additional effect.

At Healthwise Clinic we approach chiropractic as an integral and functional form of care, focusing on improving the function of the body and promoting optimal health. We strive to dispel myths and misunderstandings about chiropractic and provide our patients with the best care possible.

Indeed, chiropractic is a safe and effective method of treatment for a wide range of health problems, especially related to the spine, nervous system and musculoskeletal system. At Healthwise Kliniek we place great emphasis on the safety and well-being of our patients.

Extensive Training: Chiropractors have completed an intensive five-year university education during which they have acquired in-depth knowledge and skills in anatomy, physiology, pathology, neurology, and various chiropractic techniques. This extensive training enables them to make accurate diagnoses and develop effective, safe treatment plans.

Individually Adapted Techniques: An important aspect of chiropractic care is the individualization of treatment methods. Chiropractors are trained to choose from a variety of techniques, tailored to the specific needs and circumstances of each patient. This means that the treatment is suitable for people of all ages, from infants to the elderly.

Safety and Effectiveness: Several studies have shown that chiropractic care is one of the safest therapies for conditions such as lower back pain, neck pain and headaches. The risks associated with chiropractic care are extremely low. Chiropractors are specifically trained to apply techniques in a safe and effective manner, minimizing the risk of side effects.

Constant Further Training: To ensure the quality and safety of care, our chiropractors continuously train in the latest techniques and research. This helps them stay abreast of the latest developments in their field and provide the best care to our patients.

At Healthwise Clinic we strive to provide every patient with safe, caring and effective treatment. Our goal is not only to relieve symptoms, but also to address the root cause of the problem and improve the overall health and well-being of our patients.

Depending on the age, complaints and your wishes, certain treatment techniques are applied by the chiropractor.

Chiropractic is a holistic approach to healthcare that focuses not only on relieving complaints, but also on supporting and optimizing the nervous system and overall body functions. At Healthwise Kliniek we approach every patient with an integrated vision.

Focus on the Nervous System: The core of chiropractic care lies in the belief that many physical complaints have their origins in the nervous system. By improving the health of the spine, which is a crucial part of the nervous system, chiropractors can help restore the body's natural balance and function.

Treatment Strategy: A chiropractor uses manual adjustments and manipulations of the spine, joints and muscles to promote better alignment and range of motion. These adjustments help relieve pressure on nerves and improve communication within the nervous system, which is essential for a healthy body.

Holistic Approach: Unlike approaches that focus solely on relieving symptoms, chiropractic aims to treat the underlying causes of complaints. This means we look at the entire body and lifestyle factors such as nutrition, exercise, sleep and stress management to develop a comprehensive treatment plan.

Personalized Treatment Plans: We recognize that every patient is unique. Therefore, each treatment strategy is adapted to the patient's individual needs and circumstances. We work closely with our patients to create a plan that is not only aimed at relieving their current symptoms, but also promoting their overall health and well-being in the long term.

At Healthwise Clinic we are committed to thorough evaluation and treatment of our patients, with the aim of promoting an active and healthy lifestyle. Our team of experienced chiropractors is committed to providing quality care and supporting patients in their journey to better health.

Due to his extensive knowledge of human anatomy, the chiropractor is able to link pain and complaints to specific nerve pathways. Pain is often caused by nerve blocks (neurological blocks). Nerve pathways are then stimulated by a certain compression, for example in the neck area, which can manifest as headache complaints. What the chiropractor then does is to try to remove and care for this blockage using (manual) pressure techniques, with the aim of reducing the pain sensation and relieving the complaints. In this way, the chiropractor enables the body to repair itself.

The approach is therefore completely natural!

A frequently asked question at Healthwise Kliniek is whether treatment with the chiropractor is painful. It is important to know that chiropractic care focuses on relieving pain and improving body functions, and most patients find the treatment comfortable and relieving.

During the treatment:

  • In most cases, patients experience no pain during chiropractic treatment. On the contrary, many patients feel immediate relief from their symptoms or experience a sense of relaxation and improved well-being.
  • Chiropractic adjustments are performed with care and precision to minimize discomfort. These techniques are designed to normalize the spine and joints without unnecessary pressure.

Communication with the Chiropractor:

  • A key to successful treatment is open communication. We encourage patients to inform their chiropractor of any pain or discomfort they experience, both before and during treatment.
  • Your chiropractor will always take your feedback into account and can adjust treatment to maximize your comfort. This may mean using gentler techniques or paying extra attention to certain areas.

After treatment:

  • Some patients may experience mild tenderness or muscle soreness after their first few treatments, similar to the feeling after starting a new sport. This is normal and usually short-lived.
  • It is important to remember that this can be part of the healing process. Your body adapts to the changes made during treatment.

At Healthwise Clinic we are committed to providing safe, comfortable and effective treatment for all our patients. Our experienced chiropractors are committed to helping each patient achieve their health goals with care tailored to their unique needs and preferences.

After treatment, you may experience (mild) muscle pain or fatigue. These often disappear within a day or two days and are more common at the beginning of a treatment program and usually decrease the more often a person has been treated.

At Healthwise Clinic we understand that chiropractic treatment is an active process in which the body adapts and heals. Although most treatments are not experienced as tiring or strenuous, it is important to pay attention to your body's response after treatment.

Immediately after the Treatment:

  • It is normal for the body to respond to the adjustments made during treatment. These reactions can vary from person to person.
  • The most common reactions are a feeling of fatigue, soreness or muscle pain. This is a sign that your body is processing the changes and recovering.

Take Care of Your Body:

  • Good hydration is essential. Drink plenty of water after your treatment to support the healing process.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise immediately after your treatment. Give your body time to adapt to the changes.
  • Follow any specific recommendations your chiropractor gives, such as stretching exercises, posture advice, or light activities.

Long Term Care:

  • Keep in mind that chiropractic care is often most effective as part of a long-term health plan. Regular treatments can help maintain proper body alignment and prevent future problems.
  • Incorporating healthy habits, such as a balanced diet, regular exercise, and good sleep habits, can enhance the effects of your chiropractic treatments.

Communication with Your Chiropractor:

  • If you have any questions or concerns after your treatment, please do not hesitate to contact your chiropractor. We are here to support and guide you in your recovery process.

At Healthwise Kliniek we are committed to your overall well-being and health. Adhering to this advice after your treatment can help optimize results and promote your recovery.

On your first visit to Healthwise Clinic, we strive to give you a comprehensive and personal insight into our chiropractic care. Your first consultation is an important step on the road to recovery and well-being.

Thorough Intake:

  • Your first appointment starts with a thorough intake. The chiropractor will discuss your health history and current symptoms in detail. This helps us to get a complete picture of your general health and any specific complaints.
  • We also discuss the possible stressors in your life and how they can contribute to your physical complaints. This insight is crucial to understanding the causes of your problems and creating an effective treatment plan.

Physical examination:

  • The physical examination is an essential part of the first consultation. The emphasis is on assessing the functionality of your body, and not just the areas where you experience pain.
  • We perform various tests to evaluate your range of motion, muscle strength, and nerve function. This helps us to identify the source of your complaints and propose appropriate treatment.

Posture analysis:

  • During the consultation, a photo of your posture will be taken. This is an important tool to assess your posture and show how it is linked to your health and wellbeing.
  • The photo helps us to identify specific posture problems that may contribute to your complaints.

Clothing advice:

  • We advise you to wear comfortable clothing to your appointment. This ensures that you feel comfortable during the examination and that the chiropractor can easily perform the necessary assessments and tests.

Your first visit to Healthwise Clinic is an important step in your health journey. We are committed to providing you with a thorough understanding of your symptoms and developing a personalized treatment plan tailored to your unique needs.

At Healthwise Clinic we understand that patients often desire immediate relief from their complaints. However, it is important to recognize that effective chiropractic care requires more than a 'quick fix'. Your first appointment is an essential step in ensuring safe and effective long-term treatment.

Thorough Evaluation Necessary:

  • During your first visit, we will conduct a comprehensive evaluation of your health history, current symptoms, and lifestyle. This is crucial to get a clear and complete picture of the possible causes of your complaints.
  • In some cases, the causes of complaints are not immediately clear and require careful analysis. Our approach is to not just treat symptoms, but to tackle the underlying causes.

The Importance of Diagnostics:

  • To determine the most effective treatment strategy, it may be necessary to perform additional diagnostic tests, such as X-rays or MRIs. This helps us to understand the exact nature of your problem and to rule out possible contraindications to certain treatments.
  • The first visit also gives us the opportunity to assess your general health and wellbeing, allowing us to create a treatment plan that is fully tailored to your individual needs.

Developing a Personal Treatment Plan:

  • After the initial evaluation and any tests, we develop a personalized treatment plan. This plan takes into account your specific situation, health goals and lifestyle.
  • We will take the time to discuss this plan with you so that you fully understand what the treatment entails and what to expect.

At Healthwise Clinic, our goal is not only to relieve your symptoms in the short term, but also to contribute to your overall health and well-being in the long term. We appreciate your patience and understanding of our thorough approach, which is essential to providing you with the best possible care.

The chiropractor uses all the collected data to develop his findings and draws up a personal treatment plan. He will discuss this with you during your second consultation. You will also be treated during this consultation.

If, for whatever reason, the chiropractor requires additional information (such as X-rays, MRI results) or deems a referral to a specialist necessary (e.g. rheumatologist), this will be discussed with you.

A frequently asked question at our chiropractic clinic concerns the number of treatments required. It is important to understand that chiropractic care is customized, and the number of treatments varies per individual depending on several factors.

Personal Factors:

  • Age and Health Condition: Your age and general health play a role in the recovery process. Younger people usually recover faster, but this is not always the case.
  • Duration of the Complaints: Chronic complaints that have existed for a longer period of time may require more time to improve than recently developed complaints.
  • Stressors: Both physical and emotional stress can affect your recovery. Stress can slow the healing process and require more treatments.

Lifestyle and Self-care:

  • The way you care for your body has a significant impact on the number of treatments needed. A healthy lifestyle, including good nutrition, adequate rest and regular exercise, can speed up the recovery process.
  • We encourage patients to actively participate in their own recovery process by continuing the advice and exercises given during treatment sessions at home.

Customized treatment plan:

  • After your initial consultation and evaluation, we will draw up a personal treatment plan. This plan provides an estimate of the number of sessions required, but this can be adjusted as your treatment progresses.
  • Regular evaluations during your treatment process help us to monitor progress and adjust the plan as necessary.

At Healthwise Kliniek our goal is not only to relieve your complaints, but also to promote your overall well-being and health. We work closely with you to ensure that your treatment is as effective as possible and tailored to your personal needs and goals.

During the treatment process and during the recovery phases, there are sufficient moments to discuss the course and determine progress.
